Scalp Micropigmentation FAQs
If you’re thinking about Scalp Micropigmentation – otherwise known as SMP – you are likely to know some of the basics about it being permanent hair loss solution that aims to replicate the appearance of hair follicles, rather than replace the hair. At Cambridge Micropigmentation Centre, we want to make sure our clients are have all the information they could need before undergoing any SMP treatment with us, so here you will find a list of frequently asked questions, and at the end, you will see our contact details, if you have further questions for us.

How Does Scalp Micropigmentation Work?

Often described as a kind of medical tattoo, the basic premise of SMP is to replicate your hair follicles, so that typically, it will be impossible to tell that you have suffered from any balding as it offers the appearance of a shaved-head look. SMP works by implanting the pigment into your skin, matching the natural colour of your hair as closely as possible. SMP can also offer increased density for both men and women who have thinning hair. Each treatment session lasts around two to five hours, with the total course delivered after at least three sessions, or sometimes four. Ten days should be left between the first two treatments, with a four-week gap before any remaining treatment sessions.

How is the Hair Design Decided?

In order to design the look of your new hairstyle, we consult with you to find out your desired result and the extent of your hair loss, looking at the pattern and the stage that you are at with your hair loss. We look at any existing hair or photographs that you provide in order to match our chosen pigment with your natural hair. We identify your natural hairline shape, making sure not to start too low to begin the treatment, so that we can build on it. The pigment will also begin slightly lighter than your original hair colour for the same reason, as we then assess how the pigment settles into your skin, before deciding whether to go for a darker pigment.

How Long Does Scalp Micropigmentation Last; Is SMP Permanent?

Although there is a less permanent option (tricopigmentation), our SMP treatment comes with permanent results, so you need to be absolutely certain that you are ready to commit to completing the course and maintaining the look over the years to come. Just one course of treatment can last between two to three years, although the exact results you can expect to see will vary depending on your lifestyle and immune system.

What are the Side Effects of Scalp Micropigmentation?

Post-treatment you can expect to experience some redness on your scalp at the treatment area, showing immediately after the treatment, but fading within the first one to two days following the treatment. It can become tight and itchy, which is why it is vital to avoid scratching your scalp whilst it scabs and then heals.
